The Richmond & Twickenham Times
The paper has a useful list of which charity shops and organisations take which types of bric a brac. The page can be found at here.
The Furniture Scheme
The Furniture Scheme is a charitable organisation that collects donated furniture and household items in good condition, in and around the borough. This project supplies furniture at low cost to people who could not otherwise afford it. If the furniture you wish to donate doesn't meet current fire regulation standards then the Furniture Scheme will be unable to accept the donation as they will be unable to legally sell it. Please contact the Furniture Scheme on 020 8755 4665 if you have unwanted furniture for collection or visit www.furniture.scheme.ukgateway.net.
Ebay
Ebay is also a good source of second hand (and sometimes new) goods and furniture or a way of selling items you no longer need.
Free-cycling (re-use)
Freecycle is an international movement that has just set up a Richmond Group. The concept is simple; it operates as a yahoo group for a local area, where people wishing to give something away and people hoping to get something for free can exchange their goods. You can find all the UK branches and sign up to the one local to you by going to www.uk.freecycle.org, where you’ll see the Richmond Group already has some 2000 members since launch in July 2006! This means the opportunity to find a new home for items or finding items of interest to yourself is even higher!
Unwanted Computers
Comm-Tech Comm-tech provides value-for-money IT support services to non-profits, charities and other community groups. Many of our services are delivered through the use of recycled equipment. Our collections service for organisations and households cover much of inner London, but we can go further afield if it's worthwhile.
Unwanted computers can be donated to Computer Aid who will not only re-use them but also delete your computers memory. Computers can be droppped at their workshop in North London or arrange for a courier to collect it for a fee of £9.75 per box. Please click Here for more information.
Donate a PC also allows you to donate your IT equipment to other people who have need of it. It works similarly to Freecycle but doesn't use Yahoo.
IT for Charities also has a comprehensive list of organisations that provide IT equipment for charities.
Mobile Phones
Recycle your old mobile with BTCV, and we'll use the proceeds to help local volunteers, plant trees, help wildlife, improve footpaths and bring nature a little bit closer to a street near you! Either e-mail information@btcv.org.uk for a phone mailing envelope from BTCV or post your phone (minus SIM card and address book) to this Freepost address:
