FRIENDS OF CAMBRIDGE GARDENS
Cambridge Gardens is on the Middlesex bank of the River Thames in East Twickenham, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames; map link here. It's a picturesque setting that over looks Richmond Bridge and renowned Richmond riverside. Richmond Council decided on 12th May 2008, after a community campaign, to keep this garden for community use rather than lease to a commercial enterprise.
We have formed the Friends of Cambridge Gardens to help the council enhance this green and make it a beautiful breathing space. We hope that everyone living nearby will benefit – children, the elderly and everyone else. The more people involved the more fun it will be and all ideas are welcome! |

Tree Planting and River path: The council needed to plant trees as a condition of the demolition of the toilet block. This was controversial as many felt more trees would obscure the river and dominate the gardens. They have agreed to our compromise of a silver birch, a London plane and a magnolia, carefully positioned not to obscure the river or dominate the gardens. The Council expects to carry out planting in autumn.
Also the council used a professional designer to plan the area under the trees along the flood wall. There may also be a low retaining wall to stop soil washing onto the path.
Wild flower meadow: Though the ground between the tennis courts and the river is narrow, this area has been adopted by Arcadia as a wild flower meadow.

In autumn and winter the success of this project has been questioned, but in summer the display gives a welcome reward.
Constitution Meeting 11th June: The new constitution was approved. Also the group decided to retain the membership fee (£5 or concessions £2) which will collected on an annual basis a month before the AGM (23rd Nov 2010).
Our remit is now considered to extend in front of Richmond Bridge Estates up to Denton Road.
Tennis Court Café changing hands: Gordon, the tennis coach, has now given up management of the cafe and will concentrate on his coaching. We would like to thank him for all his help.
Also: Thanks to St Stephen’s Church for their welcome maintenance help on Sunday 27th June.
Finally: The committee next meet on Thursday 13th July to discuss a four year plan for the gardens and review events.
